A backpacking trip at the Manistee River Trail is being planned for the weekend of Nov 1-2.

TROOP 70 AUGUST 2003 NEWSLETTER
Announcements
Refunds are due to the adults who went to Northwoods last month.
The Bruce Trail backpacking crew left on Thursday, and will be back on Wednesday.
August 10 will be an Eagle Court of Honor for Jeff S., to be held at Fitzgerald Park at 4 pm. Tell the guard in the shack at the entrance to the park that you are there for the Court of Honor, and you will not be charged an entrance fee. A rehearsal for this will be held at the church on August 5 at the regular meeting.
September will have 2 Courts of Honor. The first, on Sept. 2, will be at Heritage Park, and is the annual potluck supper. The Troop will provide hot dogs. Please bring a dish to pass, your own drinks, and your own table service. The meeting starts at 6 PM.
Voting for next year's activities will also take place at this meeting. Make a list of the activities, trips, etc. that you'd like to do, and bring it to the meeting. Watch for an e-mail with more information on this subject.
Adults are needed to help make these activities work. If nobody steps forward to help, we will be stepping up to you and asking you to help us - especially if you haven't helped on something lately. (Hint - volunteer now for your favorite activity!)
The 2nd Court of Honor is Tim N.'s Eagle Court of Honor, on Sept. 9, at the church, at 7 PM. Full Class A uniform is to be worn.
The Urban Adventure trip to Chicago is tentatively set for October 4-5. The format will be a treasure hunt. Teams will be sent out into the city with a list of things to bring back.
Philmont: The Demings are hard at work planning the trip to Yellowstone next summer, and cannot plan a trip to Philmont as well. The troop is currently on a waiting list for this trip. If we do draw a spot to go, someone will have to step up and do the planning for this trip to succeed. We will try to get a spot to go to Philmont in 2005 when the signup day comes in October. If we get a spot, we will drop the 2004 date.
Yellowstone: This year many parts of the park are closed to backpacking in the summer due to bear sightings, so the choice of campsites is limited, and the campsites can be more than 20 miles apart. Also, park rules restrict group sizes to 8 campers or less. If this happens next year, planning a route will be very difficult. Next year will also be the 100th anniversary of Yellowstone as a national park, and crowds are expected. Allen Deming is working hard to overcome these obstacles.
Fundraising: Keep in mind that popcorn show-n-sell time is coming in October, as is the due date when we have to have christmas wreath orders turned in.
Service Work: Clifford Welsch, the MSU Professor who oversaw the development of the outdoor classroom prairie field at Wacousta Elementary, wants to do a slide show about the prairie, and to work with the troop to help the school make more use of the field. The date of the slide show is not set, but may be in August or September. The work to improve the field may develop into an Eagle project, or may become a project for the adult patrol.
Biking trip: A tentative biking trip has been scheduled for Sept. 13-14, possibly to the Hart-Montague trail in western Michigan.

TROOP 70 MARCH 2003 NEWSLETTER
Happy Birthday to Dan Buonodono. What a party we had after the committee meeting! Who knows what'll happen at next month's committee meeting.
We had 19 scouts signed up for Camp Kiwanis the weekend of Feb 21-23 and we had to cancel because not enough parents signed up to go! We still paid for the Camp so this is money down the drain. Parent involvement in our troop activities is essential. Parents of younger scouts - YOU need to be involved. The success of your scout and our troop depends on your support. The scouts who have become eagle or are close to becoming eagle all have parents who were/are involved with the troop. These involved parents tend to move on when their boys do.
Activity night on March 18, 7 - 8 pm at the church, will be a pizza party plus a special surprise activity. Tony Kuhlman is in charge.
The Spaghetti dinner is March 22. This is one of our major fundraisers and it is essential that a scout and parent from each family sign-up to work at least one shift. More details will be given at the meeting.
YMCA Lock-in March 29-30. It will be held at the new Westside Community YMCA on the site of the old Apple Sportplex on Lansing Road. Cost is $15 per boy with a minimum of 30 scouts. 3 parent minimum commitment must be made by March 18th or the event will be cancelled. Parents are free with a paid scout.
