Sea Base Trip 2008 – UPDATE.  Looks like we might need to change header of this section to Sea Base Trip 2009.  Cost of a trip to Florida during spring break is more expensive than summer.  We are working on another activity this summer.  More details at the next meeting on this.  

Equipment for Trailer:   Please return any equipment/tents you have from the last camp out to the next meeting. 

Fish Fry Schedule – Please see the page on the web site for the update to date schedule.   We need volunteers to fill out the list.  Please sign up at the next meeting.

Winter Campout – January 11 – 13.    Are you ready to be one of the members of the polar bear club? 

Railroad Merit Badge – Many of the scouts signed up for this Merit Badge and we will have the date/schedule on when you will be attending.

Update to January's New Letter.

Winter camp out - we are meeting at the township hall this Friday, 1/11 at 7:00 PM.   Then we will be car pooling to camp for the weekend. 

Hunter Safety - if you are interested in taking the Hunter Safety class this February, please contact Mr. Kenter to sign up and details. 

Eagle Scout Court of Honor - Mark your calendars, Kevin G's Eagle Scout  Court of Honor is scheduled for Sunday, February 3 starting at 3:00 PM at the church.   We have been assured we would be home in time for the big game.

Mackinaw Honor Guard - is planned for July 26 - August 2.     If you qualify and plan on attending, please make sure to fill out the form and turn in to Mr Kenter for approval.

Announcements and Activities

White Water Rafting - we are working on plans for a trip to OhioPyle this year.   We are checking into possible trips, dates, and cost plus the possibility of a merit badge workshop. 

Mackinaw Honor Guard – See Mr. DeYoung for forms and information.  Dates for trip are July 26 - August 2.

Spaghetti Dinner - Mark your calendars.  April 5 is the date for our one and only annual fundraiser.  The Spaghetti Dinner is a hit with everyone and a great way to support our troop.   More details along with training will follow.

UPDATE - Activity Night - Now Activity Afternoon, Sunday 2/24/08

The following is an email I received from Shawn D regarding this month's activity.  Thanks Shawn for putting this together. 

We are planing to go skating at the Summit on Sunday the 24th. We're going to meet at the church (in Wacousta) at 2:00 PM the admission is $5 and Skates are $2, but if we have more than 20 people or more the admission and skate rentals are $5, so invite friends!!!! The skating session is from 2:30-5:00.

Announcements and Activities

Northwoods- Our trip is planned for June 29 – July 5.  Mr. Crabtree will be sending out an email with more information on this trip.  If you are planning to attend this year, please sign up as soon as possible.  Any questions please see Mr. Crabtree.

White Water Rafting – July 16 – 19 is the time we have set for our trip to Ohiopyle.  This trip is open to everyone including family and friends.  Please pass the invite along and see how many we can sign up for a few days of fun.  The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, April 1.

Railroad Merit Badge – Yes this sounds like a broken record but the person we need to talk with to set this up is out of town for a few more weeks.  When we have the date and time we will pass along.

Hunter Safety Class – The dates for Hunter Safety is March 18, 20, 25, and 27.  Please see Mr. Kentor to sign up at our March 4 meeting. 

Highrope/Rockclimbing @ CMU – has been postponed due to schedule conflicts @ Central Mich University.  Still working on setting up a date for this activity.

Announcements and Activities

Spaghetti Dinner – Our annual fund raiser is this Saturday, April 5 from 4:30 to 7:00 pm.  The schedule to work will be available at this weeks meeting and will be posted on the web site Wednesday. 

We will be practicing serving for the Spaghetti Dinner.   Please wear your Class B shirt this week. 

Sell the tickets!!!  All money from sold tickets and any unsold tickets need to be returned to Deanne O by April 5, the night of the dinner. 

Don’t forget to bring your pie to donate.  Please see the handout for the spaghetti dinner for all of the details. 

Northwoods- Our trip is planned for June 29 – July 5.  We have 19 scouts and 6 adults signed this year.  If you are planning to attend this year and have not already signed up, please sign up as soon as possible and contact Mr. Crabtree.  Northwoods medical forms and forms for Merit Badges to come soon.

Announcements and Activities

Sleepy Hollow Camp – We are planning a camp out May 9 – 11.  We will be meeting @ the township hall @ 6:30 pm on Friday and returning around noon on Sunday.  Sign up will be at the May 6 meeting.  If you are unable to attend the May 6 meeting and are planning on going to the camp out, please contact Mr. Kenter.  Plans for this trip include working on the Cooking Merit Badge and will have more details at the May 6 meeting.

Memorial Day Parade – Saturday May 24th, 10:30 am in Wacousta.  Class A’s to march in the parade. 

Forestry Merit Badge - Tuesday, June 24th, Mr. Dipietro is offering the opportunity to complete the Forestry Merit Badge.     We will meet at the township hall in Wacouta at 8:00 am and travel to a sawmill, have lunch and then visit with a State Forester who will take us to a site where we will see timber being harvested.  We may also stop at a reforestation site.   Please sign up at the May 6 or 13 meeting.  We are also looking for a couple of parents to drive.  We will be returning around 5:00 pm

Looking Class Reading Program - Please sign up.  We need Scout volunteers from Noon to 3 p.m. to help either read or guide the young readers in the park.  Class B’s red Shirts required. 

Northwood’s – June 30 – July 5.  Merit Badge info is due to Mr. Crabtree at the May 6 meeting.  If you are unable to attend, please make other arrangements to turn this info in either via email gkcrabtree@comcast.net or call to make arrangements to drop off.

Final payment for Northwood’s is due by the May 6.  Again, if you are unable to attend, please contact Mr. Crabtree. 

Medical forms for Northwoods – If you turned in medical forms last year, you should be good to go this year.  If you have any questions on this, please check with Mr. Crabtree.    Also, thanks to Mr. Crabtree for all of the work he does to pull together this trip for us.  He does a great job!!!

Railroad Merit Badge – This is limited to 8 scouts so we have 2 dates planned, May 20 or 27.  Please confirm on May 13’s meeting which week you are signed up for.  On your night, meet at the church @ 5:15 pm.

Honor Guard – we have 5 Scouts, Jake C. Rich M. Sean D. Luke A., Tyler S, going to Mackinaw Island this year as Honor Guards.  Listed below are some dates for them to attend meetings.  All the info for them is listed in the packs they receive with the application.

Announcements and Activities

Railroad Merit Badge – the rescheduled date for the second group of scouts is June 10.  We will be meeting at the rail road museum at 5309 Old Lansing Road.   The scouts signed up for this session are Noah P, Tom J, Jake F, Corie K, Mitchell H, Adam B, Shawn D, Adam D, Andy S, and Rich M.  All other scouts should attend the regular meeting at the church at 7:00 PM

Forestry Merit Badge – The following is information for the scouts signed up for the Forestry Merit Badge.

Leave: 8:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 24, from the township hall in Wacousta
Return : 5:00 P.M. to the Township Hall
Bring:
- Snacks
- Money for fast food for lunch. 
- Drinking water
- Hard hat and safety glasses if you have them.  Prescription glasses are OK as safety glasses.- Spiral notebook (8.5 X 11) for notes and making a leaf collection.
- Pencil or pen
- Rain gear if necessary

Wear:
- Red troop 70 shirt
- Long pants
- Sturdy shoes. No sandals.  Tennis shoes are OK, hiking boots are preferred.

Agenda:
We will be taking a tour of a saw mill in Beal City near Mt. Pleasant in the morning that will probably last about 1 1/2 hour.  We will have lunch at Burger King in Harrison.  Then we will meet with a Forest Technician from the Au Sable State Forest who will spend a few hours in the afternoon at a logging site explaining the various forestry practices and methods used in Michigan.  We have been able to see the harvesting machinery at work in the past.

One of the requirements will be a leaf collection.  We will do the leaf collection on the trip.  All the requirements for the Forestry Merit Badge will be completed on the trip.


Looking Glass Reading Program - Please sign up.  We need Scout volunteers from Noon to 3 p.m. to help either read or guide the young readers in the park.  Class B’s red Shirts required. 

Northwood’s – June 30 – July 5. Medical forms for Northwoods are due at our Jun 10 meeting.  If you are unable to attend this week, please contact Mr. Crabtree. 

Also please note, we will be leaving for Northwoods from the township hall on Sunday, June 30 @ 8:30 am.

Announcements and Activities

Northwood’s – June 29 – July 5. Quick Update:

- It is suggested each scout put his clothes in plastic tote.  16 Gallon size suggested.   There are a few totes in trailer a scout could use for the week.

- If you bring a snack, it must be in a plastic, sealed container and it will be stored in the trailer at the camp site.

- Also please note, we will be leaving for Northwoods from the township hall on Sunday, June 29 @ 8:30 am. 

White Water Rafting - July 16 – 19 are the days.  We will be planning the meals for the trip as a group and sending an email to the families that are going.  This email will detail what we each need to bring for the meals.    We are leaving from Township hall @ 7:00 am on the 16th.   If you have any questions or need to make the final payment for this trip, please contact Mr. Deyoung. 

Person Management Merit Badge – If you are working on this badge you need to contact Mr. Gartung within the next week.   Please set up a time to meet and complete this badge.   Mr. Gartung’s phone number is listed on the Troop roster or reply to the email and I will pass it along. 

Reading Merit Badge – Each scout should work to complete this badge this summer.  Go to the Chief Okemos web page and find the info on merit badge.  Once you have completed the requirements, see Mrs. Lawson.    Also if you want to complete the family life Merit Badge, see Mrs. Lawson.

Announcements and Activities

Railroad Merit Badge – We will have a sign up for the Railroad Badge to find out how many scouts are interested.   Once we see the interest, we will set up dates.

Troop 70’s Fall Campout - We are looking to plan a Troop Campout this fall.  Once we have the dates we will send an email with the details.  

Attention All Merit Badge Counselors – we are looking to update our records.  If you are a current Merit Badge Counselor please reply to the email and list the badges.   

Sea Base 2009 – We booked August 6 – 12 for a Sea Base Sailing Trip.  We have 2 boats reserved for a total of 12 scouts and 4 parents.  We are starting a sign up sheet the week of 9/9.  Remember the minimum age is 14 years old at the time of the trip.   We estimate the cost of the trip around $1200.   We have time for a number of fund raising events to help lower the cost of the trip.   Check out www.bsaseabase.org for more info on this trip. 

Northwoods 2009 – Mark you calendars as the dates for Northwoods 2009 are June 28 - July 4.

White Water Rafting - We are looking to schedule a trip to OhioPyle in 2009.  Watch for more info to follow.

September 2 – End of Summer Potluck/Court of Honor:  Mark September 2nd on your calendar for our annual end of summer potluck and Court of Honor beginning at 6:30 at Heritage Park.  All family members are invited.  The troop will provide the hot dogs. 

Please bring a dish to pass, your own beverages and table service, lawn chairs, bug spray, a flashlight, and a good attitude from the first day of school!  We have a HUGE number of merit badges, rank advancements and honors to bestow.   You don’t want to miss it!  Class A Uniforms a must.

September 6 - the Book Bodega in Wacousta will be having a "Back in School" sale highlighting appropriate grade-level reading recommendations.  We hope to have scouts on hand to help direct customers to appropriate reading choices and maybe highlight their favorites. (Books will be grouped for you.)  In preparation, we'll need some posters advertising choices for different levels.  Contact Mrs. Lawson if you can make a poster and I'll guide you in books to include for the different levels.  You can count hours making a poster or volunteering at the store toward the four you need for the badge. . 

September 9 – Class B, Badge workshop, Reading, Cooking and Communications.  Orienteering badge work.  Board of Reviews. More info on Saturday’s outing will be covered also. 

September 13 (Saturday) Outdoor requirements for Orienteering.   We will be meeting at Granger’s pole barn on Wacousta Road @ 9:00 am and finish up at 2:00 pm.  Please bring a snack lunch and a canteen w/water (no bottle water)

September 16 – No Meeting
September 23 – Patrol Leader Meeting 7 pm
September 24 – Parent Meeting 7 pm @ the church.  All parents welcomed. 

October 7 – Class A meeting
October 14 – Class B meeting
October 17 – 19 – possible Camporee outing.  More details to follow.

Announcements and Activities

Lincoln Brick Park - Tuesday, Oct 21 @ 6:30 PM Nature hike at Lincoln Brick.  Bring a flashlight and your scout book.  Mandatory for 1st and 2nd year scouts. 

Sea Base 2009 – We booked August 6 – 12 for a Sea Base Sailing Trip.   There will be a meeting Tuesday, September 30, starting at 7:00 pm at the church.  This meeting is for the scouts going to Seabase only. 

We will be discussing the trip, fund raising, payments, etc.  The scouts we have signed up are Rich, TJ, Dan G, Jake, Shawn D, and Luke.  

Railroad Merit Badge – We will have a sign up for the Railroad Badge to find out how many scouts are interested.   Once we see the interest, we will set up dates.

Troop 70’s Fall Campout – We are planning a camp outing for Oct 17 – 19.  During our October 7 meeting we will decide if we will be going to the Camporee or travel to Northern Michigan for a 2 day hiking trip along the Manistee river.  Details on both options will be at the meeting.  

Popcorn Sales – Contact Tom Smith this week to pick up your popcorn.  If you absolutely, positively cannot pick it up this week, you MUST take delivery at the October 7th meeting.    Don’t miss out; popcorn sales are for a limit time only.    

Wreath Sales - Christmas Wreaths: This is our troop's biggest fundraiser, with the most "bang for the buck"!  We will provide order forms to you for Christmas wreaths to take pre-orders.  These Wacousta-produced wreaths are very popular and can help you build your scouting activity account for those high adventure activity costs.  Order forms will be available at our Oct 7th meeting and orders are due Nov 11.   Wreath building will be the weekend of No 22 and 23. 

Merit Badges – we have a number of Merit Badges for the Scouts to finish up.  If you are working on Reading, Personal Fitness, Orienteering/Surveying, cooking, communications, or any other merit badge, please get with the counselors to set up a time to finish.  

Chemistry Merit Badge – We have an opportunity to this merit badge on Saturday, December 6, and will run from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.  We will have a sign up at our next meeting. 

Northwood’s 2009 – Mark you calendars as the dates for Northwoods 2009 are June 28 - July 4.

White Water Rafting - We are looking to schedule a trip to OhioPyle in 2009.  Watch for more info to follow.  

Fish Fry Sign up - The first fish fry will be on Friday, October 10.  We need 3-5 volunteers to work each fish fry, on the 2nd Friday of each month through May.  This counts as service time towards rank advancement, and scouts that work get a free meal that night, too.  The Masonic Temple has helped the troop many times in the past, especially with the spaghetti dinner, our Troop’s major fundraiser.  Please sign up for a shift at the next meeting.

Cookie Night - At the Dec. 16th meeting we will be assembling cookie plates for seniors again.  Bring 2 dozen, pre-decorated, holiday cookies and 4 gift cards.  The meeting will start @ 6:30 with Pizza and Soda for the workers.

Announcements and Activities

Popcorn Sales – it’s time to wrap up the Popcorn Sales for 2008.  Please return your money and unsold popcorn to our 11/4 meeting.  Mr. Smith will be taking returns and sales money. 

Wreath Sales – Sell those Christmas Wreath’s.    Orders are due Nov 11 to Mrs. Lawson at our regular meeting.  If you are unable to attend this meeting, please either call or email the quantity you need to order to Mrs. Lawson. 

Wreath building will be the weekend of Nov 22 – 23.  Mr. Kenter will have info at the upcoming meetings. 

Sea Base 2009 Update – We have 6 scouts we have signed up are Rich, TJ, Dan C, Jake, Shawn D, and Luke A.   These scouts are working on fund raising for the trip including leaf raking and selling extra Wreaths around Thanksgiving.   Let’s plan on these 6 scouts meeting after our Nov 4 meeting finalize leaf raking for the weekend of Nov  8 – 9th. 

Railroad Merit Badge – We will have a sign up for the Railroad Badge to find out how many scouts are interested.   Once we see the interest, we will set up dates.

Silver Bells in the City – Mrs. Ainslie is working with the River Walk Theater and looking for volunteers for the evening of Nov 21.  This will count toward your community service and please see Mrs. Ainslie if interested and for details. 

Attention Honor Guard Scouts – if you attended the Honor Guard on Mackinac Island this past summer you have an opportunity to earn a scholarship to cover part of the cost of the trip.  Please write a one page letter of your experience and what you learned.  This is due to Mr. Kenter by Nov 11.

Announcements and Activities

Chemistry Merit Badge – Saturday, December 6, is the day for the chemistry merit badge.  The group of scouts will be meeting at the church @ 7:30 am and carpool to the event.    Please make sure you have talked with Mr. Deyoung regarding payment.

Wreath Sales –The wreaths have been picked up and know you are all working hard to delivery to your customers.  Please bring your sales money to Mrs. Lawson to our next meeting on Tuesday, 12/2. 

We do have a few more wreaths available for sale.  If have the opportunity to make one (or more) sale, please contact Mr. Momber via email or 517 204 3463.

Sea Base 2009 Update – We are planning our trip the in August and we have 6 scouts we have signed up are Rich, TJ, Dan C, Jake, Shawn D, and Luke.    Seabase scouts - don’t forget to fill out the application for a scholarship to Seabase.  Mr. DeYoung has the details and forms.  This is a great opportunity to help lower the cost.

Polar Bear Camp Out - Revised dates for this camp out is Feb 6, 7 and 8 and Camp Kiwanis in Mason.  This is a great weekend for the scouts to earn no only the Polar Bear but also the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge.  We will be planning this weekend at our Feb 3 meeting.

Northwood’s 2009 – Mark you calendars as the dates for Northwoods 2009 are June 28 - July 4.   For the past few years Mr. Crabtree has done a great job organizing the trip for our scouts.  We are looking for a new parent volunteer to work with Mr. Crabtree this year to learn the in’s and out’s. 

Re-Chartering in December - It’s not too early to start thinking about rechartering.  We hope you all intend to renew for another year.  $25 per scout or $35 per family.  Give payment to Mrs. Ainslie by December 16th.  Scouts older than 18 can recharter with the Venture Crew if you want to keep participating.

Orienteering/Surveying – We will be meeting on Saturday, 1/3 @ the Granger Farm on Wacousta Road to continue the Merit Badge work.    We will start at 9:00 am and lunch will be provided.   Please dress for the weather and hiking for most of the day.

PARENTS Meeting Tuesday, December 30th – 7 PM at the Kentner's.  B.Y.O.A, B or C (Appetizer, beverage or cookie!) and help celebrate another successful year!!
