Announcements and Activities

Polar Bear Camp Out - Revised dates for this camp out is Feb 6, 7 and 8 and Camp Kiwanis in Mason.  This is a great weekend for the scouts to earn no only the Polar Bear but also the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge.  We will be planning this weekend at our Feb 3 meeting.

Sea Base 2009 Update – We are planning our trip the in August and we have 6 scouts we have signed up are Rich, TJ, Dan C, Jake, Shawn D, and Luke.    Seabase scouts - don’t forget to fill out the application for a scholarship to Seabase.  Mr. DeYoung has the details and forms.  This is a great opportunity to help lower the cost.

Fish Fry Sign up – Please see the attachment to the email or the Fish Fry page on the web site for an updated schedule.  This counts as service time towards rank advancement, and scouts that work get a free meal that night, too.  The Masonic Temple has helped the troop many times in the past, especially with the spaghetti dinner, our Troop’s major fundraiser.  Please sign up for a shift at the next meeting.

Northwood’s 2009 – Mark you calendars as the dates for Northwoods 2009 are June 28 - July 4.  

Orienteering/Surveying – We will be meeting on Saturday, 1/3 @ the Granger Farm on Wacousta Road to continue the Merit Badge work.    We will start at 9:00 am and lunch will be provided.   Please dress for the weather and hiking for most of the day.

Announcements and Activities

Polar Bear Camp Out – Please note Date Change.  Due to an overbooking of the lodge we are changing the dates for this camp out.  It is now scheduled for Feb 13, 14, and 15 at Camp Kiwanis in Mason.  This is a great weekend for the scouts to earn no only the Polar Bear but also the Wilderness Survival Merit Badge, and Orienteering.  We will be planning this weekend at our Feb 10 meeting.  Also if weather permits bring your sled for some winter fun 

Spaghetti Dinner - Mark your calendars.  March 28 is the date for our one and only annual fundraiser.  The Spaghetti Dinner is a hit with everyone and a great way to support our troop.   More details along with training will follow.

*** We need a couple of parents to help Mrs. Ainslie organize the dinner.  If interested in helping please talk with Mrs. Ainslie at the next meeting. 

Cub Scout Pine Wood Derby – The Wacousta Cub Scouts are looking for Scout volunteers to help.   The event is Saturday, 1/31 from 9-12 for weight in and the race is starts at 1:00 p.m.  Please feel free to show up if you would like to help out.

Northwood’s 2009 – It’s time to sign up for Northwood’s.   There will be a list to sign at our Feb 3 meeting and $75 deposit is due March 3rd.  Total cost for a scout is 240.00 and adults are $100.   

Your help is needed – Curtis K is working on his Eagle Scout project and need your help.  If you are available to help the afternoons of February 15 and 16 please contact Curtis. 

Sea Base 2009 Update – There will be a short meeting for the 6 SeaBase Scouts after our February 3rd meeting.  We have the final cost for the trip and we will be discussing additional fund raising.

Announcements and Activities

Spaghetti Dinner - Information packets, tickets, and sign up will be at our March 3 meeting.  March 28 is the date for our one and only annual fundraiser.  The Spaghetti Dinner is a hit with everyone and a great way to support our troop.   All scouts and parents are required to work and the sign up sheet will be in the information packet.  If you don’t sign up for as requested, you will be assigned the times to work.    Also we need each scout to bring a pie to the dinner to serve. 

Please note March 24 is training for the Spaghetti Dinner.  All scouts are required to attend and we will have pizza and soda for all scouts. 

Quiet Water Society - We have an opportunity for our older scouts (14 years and older) to volunteer this Saturday (March 7) helping Mr Demming at the Quiet Water Society.    This event is held on the campus of MSU in the Farm Pavilion.    The following is a brief description of the task we received from Mr: Demming:

Assist in the set up and teardown of the QWS.   The job would be to come between 8:00 and 8:30 AM to help with last minute set up and to stay after 6:00 PM for an hour or so to help breakdown tables and chairs and for general clean up.  .  They need not stay all day and they could choose early or late shifts.  They will get in free as will uniform adult supervisors.

If you would like to volunteer, please see Mr. Kentner or Mr. DeYoung @ the March 3 Meeting.  We will be setting up carpooling leaving from the Wacousta area. 

Farm Machinery Merit Badge – is planned for Saturday, March 14.  This will start at 9:00 am and be held at Granger’s farm on Wacousta Road and run to approx 3:00 pm.  Please see Mr. Ainslie at the March 3 meeting to sign up.   

Home Repair Merit Badge – is planned for Saturday, March 21, at Mr. Smith’s house.   See Mr. Smith for details and to sign up. 

Fish Fry Sign up – Please see Steven O. if you have not signed up to work at a Fish fry this year. 

Northwood’s 2009 – Don’t forget your $75 deposit for Northwoods is due March 3rd.    Please See Mr. Crabtree.     

Sea Base 2009 Update – We have a couple of updates for the Seabase Scouts. 

First one is we are planning a Pancake breakfast on Saturday, April 18.  The time will run from 8 – 11 am.   All Seabase Scouts are required to work this and we will be looking for volunteers from the other scouts.

The second update is we are going to have a bake sale during the spaghetti.   We are asking for donations from the all scout families for small plates of cookies, brownies, or other favorite treats.  We will be selling during the dinner and the proceeds will go toward the Seabase trip.

Announcements and Activities

Nuclear Science Merit Badge – is being held on Saturday, April 11.  The event runs from 9 – 4 at the MSU Chemistry Building.  We will be meeting @ 7:45 am at the Watertown Hall on Wacousta Road to car pool to the event.  Cost for lunch is $5.00.  We will have a sign up at our April 7 meeting. 

Northwood’s 2009 – We have 16 scouts and 8 parents signed up for this year.  There will be more info at our April meetings regarding Merit Badges, required forms etc.  Please see Mr. Crabtree if you have any questions. 

Sea Base 2009 Update – Attention all Seabase Scouts.  We are going to be meeting Tuesday, March 30, from 7 – 8 pm at the church.   We will be planning our Pancake Breakfast as well as going over finances.  All Seabase Scouts are required to attend along with a parent.  

April’s activity – Open swim at HS pool on April 21.  We will be doing the swim test for those going to Northwoods.  Open swim is from 6:30 to 8:30.  Also any scout working on their 1st or 2nd class rank, please bring your book as you will be able to accomplish the water portion of this rank advancement.   Please feel free to attend anytime during these 2 hours.  

Forestry Merit Badge - Tuesday, June 23rd, Mr. Dipietro is offering the opportunity to complete the Forestry Merit Badge.     We will meet at the township hall in Wacousta at 8:00 am and travel to a sawmill, have lunch and then visit with a State Forester who will take us to a site where we will see timber being harvested.  We may also stop at a reforestation site.   Please sign up at the May 6 or 13 meeting.  We are also looking for a couple of parents to drive.  We will be returning around 5:00 pm

Workshop for Beginning Woodcarving – The Capital Area District Library is having a Workshop for Beginning Woodcarving.  We called to see if the people teaching are a merit badge councilors, but they aren't.  Scouts may still like to go to it.  Below is information if you think anyone is interested.

Announcements and Activities

Campout @ Sleepy Hollow – May 8 – 10 are the dates for the campout.   We will be working on the requirements for the younger scouts including knots, first aid, cooking, camping, totin’ chip and hiking.  Tenderfoot scouts will begin their physical fitness. 

More details such as what should the new scouts pack for, food arrangements, when and when we will meet will all be covered at our May 5th meeting.   

Farm Mechanics Merit Badge – on May 8 @ 9:00 am we will be meeting at the Watertown Township hall to work on our second part of this merit badge.  We will be traveling to Bader’s in Portland.   Then we will return to Granger’s barn on Wacousta Road to complete the test.  We should finish around 3:00 pm.  

Northwood’s 2009 – We have 16 scouts and 8 parents signed up for this year.  We have a few reminders and information for everyone going this year

-Final payment is due at our May 5 meeting.  Scouts will owe an additional $165.00 and adults will owe $75.00
-Merit Badge Make up for Signing up.  More info at the May 5th meeting
-Medical forms
-Trailer.  We are looking for a volunteer to pull the trailer up and/or back from Northwoods.  If you would like to help please contact Mr. Crabtree. 

Mr. Crabtree will be sending out an email to everyone that is signed up with details on everything needed.

May’s activity – Canoeing down the Grand River.   We will be starting at Delta Mill Park @ 6:30 pm.   If you have a Canoe to bring please do so.  All scouts should bring a life jacket.  We will be ending near the scout building in Grand Ledge.  Please note, the water level will need to go down.  If there is a change we will send out an email.

Working on a Merit Badge?  - Please remember when working on a merit badge, you need to talk with your Merit Badge Counselor before going forward with a requirement.  

Special Awards – We have 4 scouts receiving their AD Altare Dei Pins this Sunday, 5/3, at St. Michaels in GL. 

Open Positions for Troop.   Thank you to Dave Batz for taking over the Northwoods Coordinator and Jean Fellows for taking on the task of Community Service Projects.    We still have an opening for Committee Secretary.   We need someone to attend the monthly meetings and prepare the news letter as well as troop roster and other misc paperwork.  If you are interest please see Mr. Momber.   We need to fill is position right away to keep the newsletters coming!!!

Announcements and Activities


Northwood’s 2009 – We have 16 scouts and 8 parents signed up for this year.  We have a few reminders and information for everyone going this year:

-Forms are due to Mr. Crabtree by 6/16.  This includes physicals, camper release form and a copy of your medical card (please enlarge if possible)
-We will be leaving for Northwoods from the township hall on Sunday, June 28 @ 8:30 am sharp.  Don’t be late.  
-Trailer.  We are looking for a volunteer to pull the trailer up and/or back from Northwoods.  If you would like to help please contact Mr. Crabtree.
-All Scouts are to travel in their 1st Class uniforms to Northwoods.

Open Positions for Troop.   We now have a new Committee Secretary.  Beth Johnston will be taking over this role including the monthly news letter.  Thank you also to Dave Batz for taking over the Northwoods Coordinator and Jean Fellows for taking on the task of Community Service Projects.   

Scout Store Sale - Saturday, June 6, is the date of a sale at our Scout Store.  The store is open from 10:00 to 2:00.  10% off any purchase of $50 or more.

Spaghetti Dinner Committee - we are looking for a small group of parents to work on a committee for our only troop fund raiser.  We had a successful year and would like to build on this.  Please see either Steve Momber or Michelle Lawson. 

Honor Guard Scouts - Regarding Scouts going to Mackinac Island for Honor Guards needing to borrow or buy clothes items needed for duty (shorts, long pants, shirts and socks mainly).  If someone has red jackets, ponchos or other parts of uniform that may be needed we would appreciate that also.  People who have these items can bring them to next meeting, or contact Mrs. Ainslie with what they have and the size they have items in.  We need these as soon as possible.

Announcements and Activities


Orienteering-If working on merit badge you should be at Openlander’s at
10:00. If coming from Grand River, turn east on Clark Rd, drive about ½ mile
then look for a sign or scout trailer on the south side of the road (Sept. 12).

Church Defibrillator Fund – We will be collecting donations at the Court of
Honor picnic to purchase a defibrillator for the Wacousta Church since they
let us use the building and support us in so many ways.

Home Repair – schedule a date to finish badge work.

Fish Fry – 2nd Friday of every month from Oct. – May. You will need to sign
up for volunteering soon.

June or July 2010 White Water Rafting.  Please watch for more details.

**Please be sure to check out the attached financial report that shows
your scout’s individual account balance. Some scouts had $12 withdrawn
from their account for the Sleepy Hollow trip in May. This withdrawal
may have given some scouts a negative balance. If your scout has a
negative balance you should see Bud Lawson.

Scholarship for Honor Guard reimbursement-Any scout that went to
Mackinaw can write a reflective report about their experience and turn it in
on Sept. 8th. The troop will then review the reports to determine who may
receive ½ of their camp reimbursed.

Show up at 3pm and leave at noon on Sunday. Will be working on wilderness
survival.

Announcements and Activities

Popcorn Sales- Scouts can start selling popcorn on Friday, Sept. 25th.  See Mr. Smith if you need an order form or if you want to pick up popcorn to sell you can contact him as well. Please return order forms during the November 3rdmeeting. 

Clare Witch Camp Rotary - Meet at township at 8:00 am (subject to change) on Saturday, October 24th to camp in Clare and 

Wreath Sales- You can start selling wreaths as soon as you have the order form (see attachment).  The order forms will be due on October 27th.  Please start-collecting pinecones for the wreaths too.
Wreath Show and Sell Following up on our success with the SeaBase Scouts holding a special sale of Christmas wreaths around the Thanksgiving Holiday, we are going to open this opportunity to all the scouts in the troop.   We plan on selling these wreaths the Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving and again the Friday and Saturday after.  We will seel them at the same stores we were at last year i.e. Felpausch, Gander Mountain, and Tractor Supply.    There will be a sign up at our Oct 6 and 13 meetings.  We are looking for volunteers Scouts and Parents to help sell these wreaths too.   Profits from the sale of these wreaths will be divided among the scouts that help during these sales.   Any questions please see Mr. Momber.

Winter Movie Night December 12, 2009, Midnight-6:00AM @ NCG Cinemas Cost: $20.00 per person for all 3 movies. (whether you see 1 movie or all three) Extra: $2.75 for as much popcorn and pop you can handle.  We have a rare opportunity to have NCG Cinemas to ourselves for an entire night.  There will be three different movies available (won't know which until they are released during the December 12th date) that are rated G->PG->PG13.  Reservations and money must be in no later than October 30th. Re-chartering – We will be re-chartering in December.  The costs have gone up from National.  It will be $30 for an individual scout and $40 for a family of two or more scouts

October October 6 – Class B’s Plan for Clare Witch at 7:00 and anyone who needs to get their 5 mile hike for second class should be at the church at 6:00 Check your book to see if you have it signed off to know if you need to do this. You will be walking a 5 mile hike so where appropriate clothing (something reflective) and shoes (rain or shine).

Announcements and Activities

Popcorn Sales – It is time to wrap up the Popcorn Sales for 2009.  Please return your order forms, money, and unsold popcorn to our Nov 3 meeting.  Mr. Smith will be taking returns and sales money. 

Wreath Sales – Orders for Christmas Wreaths were due Oct 27 to Mrs. Lawson.  If you have any outstanding orders, please call or email Mrs. Lawson with the quantity you need.  Wreath building for the initial 50 wreaths to be sold at storefronts will take place on Nov 14 at Mr. Kenter’s house.  Wreath building for the orders placed will be Nov 21 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Contact Mrs. Lawson if you have questions or cannot attend on Nov 21.  You can sign-up for storefront sales at the Nov 3 meeting.

Leaf Raking Fundraiser – If there is interest, the boys need to coordinate their efforts with the SPL or his delegate.  This should be done soon as the leaves will soon be gone.

Clare Witch Haunt – The Treasurer suggested using Troop funds rather than Scout funds to cover the cost of lighting & sound.  Parents voted and passed this recommendation.

Fish Fry – If you have not signed up to work at a fish fry, please do so at the next meeting.  It is important that you show up to work on the dates you sign up for.  If you cannot make it for your shift, please try to find a replacement and/or contact Mrs. Fellows.  Nov 13 workers: Nat F., Tyler S., Caleb S., Noah D., Alex T., and Mrs. Fellows.  Dec 11 workers: Adam B., Trevor C., Mitchell H., Matt L., and Mr. Batz.  If you plan to eat, show up around 6:30 and wear your Class A uniform.  Wear your Class B t-shirt for clean-up which begins 7:00 or shortly after.

Silver Bells in the City – Mrs. Ainslie is working with the River Walk Theater and looking for volunteers for the evening of Nov 20.  This will count toward community service.  Contact Mrs. Ainslie for more details. 

Cookie Night - At the Dec 15 meeting, we will be assembling cookie plates for seniors.  Please bring 2 dozen, pre-decorated holiday cookies and 4 greeting cards.  The meeting will start at 6:30 with pizza and soda for the workers.  The assembled cookie trays will be distributed at Serenity Place in Grand Ledge on Dec 16.  Boys will be picked up after school at Hayes and Beagle.  Details to follow regarding drivers needed.  (Supplies reminder: plates, zip lock bags, gloves – Mr. Momber; non caffeinated soda – Mr. Lloyd & Mrs. Totte;  glasses & napkins – Mrs. Fellows; bows – Mrs. Ainslie; tape – Mr. DeYoung.)

Communications Merit Badge – We will be doing another presentation Feb 2010 for Webelos interested in learning more about our Troop.  This is an excellent opportunity to work on your Communications Merit Badge.  Please contact Mrs. Totte at one of the next couple of meetings if you are interested.

Theater Merit Badge – Mrs. Ainslie's daughter is involved with theater.  She is available to work anyone interested in earning the Theater Merit Badge.  You will work with lighting, sound, take part in a play, and work on props.  See Mrs. Ainslie for more details. 

Orienteering Merit Badge – Contact Mr. Ainslie if you started the merit badge last fall and have not completed it.

Other Outstanding Merit Badges – Contact your merit badge counselor.

Polar Bear – Locations are being researched.  Camp Kiwanis is booked for the winter.

White Water Rafting – Available dates include June 9-12, 2010 (begins the day after school is out) and June 16-19, 2010.

Philmont – Information is being reviewed for attending in 2011.  Applications will be accepted Nov 11 through Dec 1 for those interested.  Boys must be 14 years old and First Class Rank by the time they participate.  See Mr. DeYoung for more information.

Scout reminder – If you sign up for something as a scout and you do not show up, you will still be responsible for paying for that activity if there is a charge.  Extenuating circumstances do apply.
Looking for new committee members – We are in need of two volunteers to take over the Committee Chairperson position and the Rank Advancement position.  See Mr. DeYoung if you are interested.

Pictures – The historian is looking for pictures of the troop for any troop activity.  You can email them to johnstonb@glps.k12.mi.us or give them to Mitchell H. at any meeting.
