Announcements an Activities
Philmont Expedition – The final payment of $312.50 was due March 1, 2011. If you have any health issues especially foot related start to address them now. Now is the time to start getting physical (walking, jogging, biking, swimming, …).
Reminder to all scouts: New physicals are needed every year for Northwoods and Philmont. Now is an ideal time to make an appointment with your Doctor.
Reminder to Northwoods participating Parents – All adults over the age of 18 who set foot on Northwoods Scout Reservation (for summer camp only) are required to have clearance from the State of Michigan. This is a state law. Any parents planning to attend need to complete the DHS-194 form and send it (or hand deliver it) with a copy of your driver’s license to your local Dept. of Human Services office. See www.michigan.gov/canregistryclearance for information on central registry clearance requests and how to contact the local DHS.
Northwoods Camp – We will start signing up for Northwoods in February. The first payment of $75 for each scout and $55 for each parent is due March 8th. We are scheduled to go June 26th – July 2nd. The final balance for each scout is $175 and parent is $110. This is due May 10. The second week is July 24 – 30th for $99.

Spaghetti Dinner – March 26 is the date of our annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser. All scouts and parents are required to work. The training for the Spaghetti Dinner is scheduled for March 22 at 6:30. All scouts are required to attend the training. There will be pizza and soda served by the scouts.
Quiet Water Symposium - Our scouts have the opportunity to volunteer at the March 5 Quiet Water Symposium. Help is needed throughout the day. Come and help for part of the day or all.

Bring $3.00 for lunch
**Outdoor Activity Committee needed. This committee will work with boys to help them plan camping and fun time activities. This will also help set up scouting challenges at regular meetings to reinforce what scouting is. Please contact Mrs. Ainslie.

Nuclear Science Badge
This will be held on April 9. Registration is from 8:30 – 9:30. We will meet at the Cyclotron. Maps and more info. to come.
Pancake Breakfast Fund Raiser for Philmont
This will take place on April 16 from 8 – 11. Any scouts that are interested may contact Mr. Batz or Mr. De Young. All Philmont scouts are required to participate.
Reading & Scholarship Merit Badges
Reading - 10-12 noon, Saturday April 23 at GLADL in Wacousta. Up to 8 scouts can attend. Scouts are advised to download the merit badge workbook from meritbadge.org to use during the session; Scouts sign up at the Troop meeting.
Prerequisites: Scouts complete registration for a library card (or bring their current library card) and Internet permission form from GLADL in advance.
Scholarship - 10 -12 noon on Saturday, April 30th at GLADL in Wacousta. Up to 8 scouts can attend. Scouts are advised to download the merit badge workbook from meritbadge.org to use during the session; Scouts sign up at the Troop meeting.
Prerequisites: Scouts complete registration for a library card (or bring their current library card) and Internet permission form from GLADL in advance. Scouts must bring a copy of their most recent report card, showing two or more semesters/trimesters to review with MB counselor and your planner (or copy several pages from it).
Both Merit Badges require work (mostly reading and writing reports) beyond what will be covered in the session. I can go over the work as the Scouts complete it at regular Troop meetings, or schedule a follow-up session as needed. You can contact Mrs. Fellows at mjfellows@arialink.com or by phone) or sign up at the April 12 Troop meeting.
Communications Merit Badge

We will be meeting at the Township Hall on Friday at 6:30 PM and leave at 7:00. We will then return on Sunday between 12 and 12:30. Be sure to bring in items listed on the attachment.

Nuclear Science – If you attended the Jan. 1st tour of the cyclotron at MSU and you are interested in earning the nuclear science badge please plan on attending meetings on July 12 and July 23 with Mr. Lawson.
Forestry Merit Badge – If you are planning on attending on June 23 with Dan DiPietro please bring snacks, money for fast food or a sack lunch, drinking water, hard hat, safety glasses (if you have them), spiral notebook, pencil or pen, and rain gear (if needed). Please meet at the township at 7:45 and will return around 5:30.

Troop Mapping 2012 – Attached to the August Newsletter e-mail, you will find a survey. To help your Patrol and Troop plan activities for the next year (and make scouting the kind of experience you want it to be), please tell us what activities you would like to do in the next year. Please consider the reasonableness of your requests, but at the same time do not be afraid to be bold and different about your ideas. Please contact Mr. DeYoung at (517) 626-2494 or Caleb S. or Adam B. if you have questions. Plan to turn in your survey at one of the August meetings.
Island Art Fair – Several boys signed up to help pass out maps and fliers at the Island Art Fair on Saturday, August 6. Contact Mr. Batz (614-2044) if you are interested in earning service hours. Volunteers may still be needed for the shifts beginning at 12:00. Plan to wear your Class A shirt (neckerchief not required).
Truck Transportation Merit Badge – The merit badge will be taught on Saturday, September 24 at the Meijer Distribution Center (3303 S Creyts) from 1:00 to 4:00. The merit badge counselor is Donald W Pratt III. If interested, call (616) 889-8626. Class size is limited to the first 30 scouts.

September 10 Court of Honor – This is our annual end of the summer potluck and Court of Honor from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the church. All family members are invited. The troop will provide the hot dogs, water, and lemonade. We will also have cake and ice cream after the ceremony.
Please bring a dish to pass, your own beverages (if you don’t want water or lemonade), table service, and a good attitude from the first week of school. We have a number of merit badges, rank advancements, and honors to bestow. You don’t want to miss it. Class A uniforms a must.

Biking Trip – We will meet at the Township Hall at 5:30 on Friday. Be sure to bring warm clothes! You will need layers of clothing for the bike ride and layers of clothing for sleeping. A knit hat would be great to have for sleeping.
Nuclear Science Merit Badge – The final class session will be on October 18th. Anyone that attended the first night: your homework was to find three nuclear occupations. You should also research the school requirements and skills for each position.
Clare Witch Haunting – It is not too late to sign up! This is a great time to use your imagination and creative skills. We will once again be going to Camp Rotary to put on a safe Halloween Experience with an evening of excitement and spooky fun for the whole family. The troop will plan and prepare props for the event. The departure time will be determined later. Will arrive home on Sunday by noon.
Volunteer Needed ASAP – The troop is looking for a parent to organize the wreath storefront sales. This means you would be coordinating where and what time the scouts would be selling the wreaths and getting scouts signed up to cover the times allotted. The scouts have already picked the days. You may refer to Steve M. for questions and mentoring.
Pole Barn Needed! – Our troop is in need of a pole barn for wreath building. The dates we are looking to build the wreaths are Nov 12, 13, 19, and 20.

Announcements and Activities
Popcorn Sales - Orders are due by Tuesday, Nov. 1st. Please contact Mr. Smith at (517) 204-5284 if you have questions or orders.
Wreath Orders – Orders were due Oct. 25th; however, it is not too late to contact Mrs. Lawson at (517) 627-5845 if you missed the date. Please do so ASAP.
Fish Fry - Nov. 11 volunteers: Adam B., Gabe T., Chris L., Nathaniel L., and Mr. Batz. We need two more scouts and one adult to volunteer. If you have not signed up to work at a fish fry, please do so at the next meeting. Remember all scouts are expected to help out. It is important that you show up to work on the dates you sign up for. If you cannot make it for your shift, you need to find a replacement. Contact Mrs. Fellows if you have questions. If you plan to eat, show up around 6:30. Wear your Class B t-shirt for clean-up which begins 7:00 or shortly after.
Troop Nominations and Elections – Nominations for troop positions will be held on Nov 8th. Nominees need to understand the responsibilities and duties of the position they seek and plan to follow through with their commitment (e.g., SPL and Patrol Leaders, or their assistants must attend monthly patrol leader meetings). Position descriptions will be provided Nov. 1st. Elections will take place on Nov. 15th.
Wreath Building and Storefront Sales –Wreath building will take place at the Mombers' (3896 East Saginaw Hwy) on Nov. 12 (9 a.m. to noon) for store front sales. We will also build on Nov. 19 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) to fill your wreath orders. Please call Steve at 627-0485 if you get lost or need specific directions.
Store front sales are planned for Nov. 12, 13, 25, and 26. Sign-up sheets will be available at the Troop meetings. Scouts will share the store front profits based on the number of hours they help with sales and building the wreaths.
MSU Planetarium – We are planning to visit the planetarium on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 4:00 PM. Cost: Adults $3, Students $3.50, Kids under 13 $2. Now playing Relics of the Big Bang which illustrates the monumental scale of a project that extends from Geneva, Switzerland to East Lansing. Along the way, the audience is invited to take a closer look at the Large Hadron Collider, the ATLAS detector, and to learn more about dark matter, the Higgs particle, and other fascinating physical mysteries. This show was produced locally by students and staff at MSU.
Pictures Wanted – The following Scouts are looking for pictures to include in their upcoming Eagle Court of Honor ceremonies: Steven Openlander, Luke Ainslie, Rich Momber, and Dan Crabtree. Steven will need any pictures you have very soon.
Eagle Scout Court of Honor - Steven Openlander will be holding his Eagle Scout Court of Honor at the Wacousta United Methodist Church on November 20th at 3:00PM. Congratulations Steven for earning the rank of Eagle Scout!
Scout Awards – Have you earned any of the following awards: Totin' Chip, Firem'n Chit, BSA Lifeguard, Den Chief Service Award, Kayaking BSA, Mile Swim, Paul Bunyan Woodsman, Snorkeling BSA, World Conservation Award, or Leave No Trace? If you have, please let Mr. Grant know so he can update your records on the BSA website. He will need to know the date you earned the award.

Announcements and Activities
Popcorn Available – We still have popcorn available for sale – primarily the microwave variety. Contact Mr. Smith at 626-2644 for more information.
Wreath Sales – Please plan to turn in proceeds from wreath orders at one of the next two Troop meetings. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Lawson at 627-5845.
Fish Fry – Our next Fish Fry is on Dec. 9.

If you cannot make it for your shift, it is your responsibility to find a replacement. You should also inform Mrs. Fellows of your replacement. Plan to wear your red Class B shirt.
Order of the Arrow (OA) – Jason Kerschke, Migisins District Executive, will join our meeting on December 6 to share information about OA and help with elections. Scouts must be First Class rank or higher and meet a few other requirements to be considered. If interested in OA membership, plan to attend the meeting to get more information.
Cookie Night - We will be assembling cookie plates for seniors at the Dec. 13 meeting. Please bring 2-3 dozen, pre-decorated holiday cookies and 4 greeting cards. The meeting will start at 6:30 with pizza and soda for the workers. The assembled cookie trays will be distributed at Serenity Place in Grand Ledge on Thursday, Dec 15. We will need volunteers to pick up the boys after school. For more information, please refer to the Cookie Night email that was sent out on Dec. 2 or contact Mrs. Fellows.
Citizenship in the Nation Merit Badge – Have you earned this Eagle required merit badge yet? If not, two dates have been scheduled at the Turner Dodge House – December 22 from 11:00 to 1:00 and February 4 from 2:30 to 4:30. The cost is $4 per scout and $2 per adult attending. Sign-up sheets will be available at the next Troop meeting.

Scout Books – This is a reminder that Scouts should bring their Scout books to all meetings and activities to ensure achievements get signed-off. Be sure to label your book - name and troop number (and consider contact information).
